Types of schools offering online degree programs
Many different types of schools offer online education programs — from full degree programs offered by colleges and universities to certification programs by professional training companies. Here are the different programs available to help you in your search to find the right school.

  • Colleges and University Programs

Four-year colleges and universities offer a wide range of educational choices, including professionally recognized certificate programs, continuing education for professionals, noncredit courses, and full bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate programs.

  • Community College Programs

Historically, community colleges have offered two-year associate’s degrees or certificate programs to students who live in close proximity to the school. Today, community colleges have become among the most proactive institutions in expanding their course offerings well beyond the local community to offer courses online.

  • Technical School Programs

The courses offered by technical schools usually prepare students for technical careers. This may include training in the fields of automotive maintenance, healthcare, or cooking.

  • Certificate Programs

Many certification programs are available for technology professionals.  These programs offer courses that train you in a particular technical specialty.  After your training is complete, you must still take any required exams in order to receive your actual certificate.

Most of the certification programs only prepare you to take a certification exam offered by companies like Microsoft or Oracle. You don’t actually earn an official certificate from the training institution; they just prepare you to take an exam.

  • Training Companies

Online training companies offer a full range of different courses covering a number of fields. They typically offer a variety of courses that may cover general-interest areas such as personal enrichment or how-to courses such as flower arranging.  Prices for the courses can range anywhere from $50 to $250.
